Driving To A Paradise Named Key West

My wife has a business convention every year, and every year she asks me if I want to go with her. The fact that it typically happens in March in cities like Indianapolis and Chicago make me say no pretty quickly, but this year the travel gods were smiling on us. The trip was to Miami and I couldn’t say yes fast enough. I wasn’t too interested in Miami itself, but I was excited to take a few extra days to drive down the Overseas Highway and check out Key West.

My friends said that the total flight from Miami would take less than an hour (and most of that was taxiing), but ever since I heard about that drive, I had always wanted to experience it. I was not disappointed. There is nothing else like being in the middle of a seven mile bridge looking out and seeing nothing but crystal clear blue water and lush green islands for miles. We took some extra time to poke into the little towns along the way, but the closer we got, the quicker we wanted to get there.

Key West was everything we hoped it would be. The legendary sunset was beautiful, the nightlife was fun filled and overwhelming, and the Key West restaurants left us so happily stuffed that it was all we could do to lounge by the pool and order another round of margaritas. We decided that it didn’t matter where next year’s convention was: as soon as it was over, we’d be hopping a flight to Miami and taking that drive again.

Ideal Vacationing is Island Vacationing

The best time of year is undeniably vacation time. People seek out many different outcomes from their vacation. Vacation is the chance to escape the receptive routine of everyday life and give us something to look forward to. Some people will wish to go to the mountains, while more will seek out the sun. Since most of us only get the chance to get away once or twice a year, it is important to make the most of our time away. One thing to do to make sure a vacation goes off without a hitch is to do the activity planning in advance. The Difference between Good Outdoor Dining and Great Outdoor Dining in Key West

Everyone thinks that it’s simple to offer outdoor dining. Throw a table and a couple of chairs on the sidewalk and, viola, you now have patio seating. While I have seen many people enjoy dining at such haphazardly designed aL fresco seating, there is considerably more that must be done to make the experience memorable. Unfortunately, no matter how much you do, there are some things that need to be left up to Mother Nature, city planners and just plain, dumb luck. It is this unlikely trinity that allows one Key West restaurant, The Roof Top Café, to have the most memorable and romantic dining deck on the island. Patrons of the restaurant dine on the freshest seafood and the best crab cakes in Key West, while sitting under the yawning limbs of a beautiful Chinese Mahogany tree.

The old tree is so large that its age can only be guessed between forty years and, “I think George Washington climbed it once.” Unfortunately, anyone who was a part of the decision to let it grow despite its location next to the curb of Front Street, is no longer around. No one knows who to thank for that decision. Gratitude is certainly due as the beautiful and regal tree adds to an already memorable dining experience.

Award winning cuisine, impeccable service and the charming and romantic atmosphere are complimented perfectly by the old and majestic tree. Visitors come back to this premier Key West restaurant every year, requesting to sit at the same table under the shade of the giant Mahogany tree where they first experienced Roof Top Cafe. No matter what other restaurants might do to create their own outdoor dining experience, the mighty Chinese Mahogany is one contribution to the charm of The Roof Top Cafe that cannot be duplicated.

A Northern Perspective of Key West, FL Vacations

Folks are really trying to get away this year. Many Americans experienced one of the most brutally cold winters on record, and are itching to hit the warmth of a destination vacation somewhere. Tropical. Key West, Florida is the ideal solution to that predicament. A trip to a bone-warming, sun-soaking tropical paradise with nothing to do buy lie there and breathe…I’m in.

Not everyone has the same opinion, but I am a huge fan of the warm sunshine of an island or coastal town with great beaches. I originally hail from Kansas, and our vacations back then were to Colorado, to some resort like Vail or Aspen. Ugh. I love to ski…don’t get me wrong…but you can’t get a decent crab cake at Copper Mountain. Give me a Pina Colada and some key lime pie under a cabana by the surf…I love Key West, FL for my vacations today.

Key West has a little of everything that a frozen Northerner might want out of an island vacation. Deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, and a beautiful line of beaches, along with top-end Key West restaurants with the finest seafood available…anywhere. From casual elegance to fine dining and outdoor patio dining, Key West restaurants leave little to be desired, offering the best key lime pie on the planet, to the crabcakes you will talk about for the rest of your life.

I’m not going to knock any place a person might enjoy, but islands and that laid-back feeling that comes with such a tropical environment is a great choice for a destination vacation.
